Multi-Stag-Flash is a thermal desalination process that uses several evaporation chambers connected in sequence. The water evaporates in the first stage, the steam condenses and provides the heat for the next stage. In this way the same energy is used multiple times. The process is robust, produces very pure water and is suitable for large plants, but it is more energy intensive than reverse osmosis.
Operation
A multi stage evaporation system (MSF – Multi-Stage-Flash) requires constant heat, stable pump performance and clean pre filtration. The heating chambers must remain free of deposits, otherwise the efficiency drops. Pumps, heat exchangers and vacuum systems need regular maintenance because even small pressure losses immediately disrupt the evaporation process. The plant operates reliably only when temperatures, pressures and salinity are continuously monitored. This requires trained specialists, spare parts, chemicals and a clear procedure for cleaning and descaling the heat exchangers.
Sustainability
MSF is thermally energy intensive. To produce 1 m³ of drinking water the process requires many times more energy than an RO plant because the water is fully evaporated. The brine returns to the sea highly concentrated and warm, which requires careful discharge. MSF becomes more sustainable when waste heat is used or when the plant is coupled to power stations. Material consumption is low, but ongoing emissions are high when fossil heat is used. Thermal desalination is technically robust but ecologically only sensible when the energy source is clean or already available, for example through an industrial complex.
